November

This month’s featured member has been portraying Santa Claus for the past four years. St.NickPDX aka Santa Mark and his wife are the founders of Secret Santa Charities. Their organization, helps feed and clothe the homeless, provide gifts to needy children, and help support struggling families during the holidays. We caught up with Santa Mark a few days ago, and here is what he had to say...

ClausNet: How long have you been portraying Santa Claus and how did you get started?
St.NickPDX: "This will be my 4th year. I got started because of a family tradition that sort of grew! When our kids were young, my wife and I made sure they learned to give back. One of the ways was we always selected a family or two and would buy or make things they needed. Then on Christmas Eve we would leave the wrapped items (from Santa) on their doorstep, ring the doorbell and run. A few years ago, my son actually suggested we start a charity doing the same thing only delivering as Santa. We liked the idea, formed the 501(c)(3) and the rest is history! My wife and I now appear as Santa and Mrs. Claus for families and corporations to raise money for the charity. Every penny we raise is then used for the families we help."

ClausNet: What or who are your influences on your portrayal of Santa Claus?
St.NickPDX: "I am definitely influenced by Richard Attenborough's portrayal as well as Tim Allen's in the Santa Clause."

ClausNet: What do you enjoy most about being Santa Claus?
St.NickPDX: "The look of joy and hope in the eyes of the 200 or so families we help each year!"

ClausNet: What is your most memorable visit?
St.NickPDX: "Last Christmas Eve I visited a mother and son. The son was 15, autistic and a fan of Santa. His mother told me in advance that he didn't speak and wouldn't want to be touched. I arrived and began placing presents under the tree. Suddenly I heard a booming voice yell ‘Santa!’ and he rushed in and wrapped me in a huge hug! I looked at his mom and she was crying. Then I teared up. It was awesome! She texted me later in the night to tell me that was the first time he had spoken in years."

ClausNet: Do you have a favorite gig?
St.NickPDX: "The EverGreen Air and Space Museum for sure! I get to arrive by helicopter."

ClausNet: What is your dream gig?
St.NickPDX: "I would love to arrive at an event by actual sleigh and reindeer!"

mark

ClausNet: What keeps you busy when you are not being Santa?
St.NickPDX: "I own a boutique business consulting firm and sit on some boards."

ClausNet: What are your hobbies / interests?
St.NickPDX: "Flying and Fly Fishing."

ClausNet: What is your favorite color?
St.NickPDX: "Blue."

mark

ClausNet: What is your favorite food?
St.NickPDX: "I love Southern Buttermilk Biscuits and Country Gravy!"

ClausNet: Coke or Pepsi?
St.NickPDX: "Coke."

ClausNet: What is your favorite cookie?
St.NickPDX: "Snickerdoodles."

ClausNet: What is your favorite movie?
St.NickPDX: "A River Runs Through It."

ClausNet: Do you have a favorite Christmas movie?
St.NickPDX: "I do! It is ‘It Happened on Fifth Avenue’."

ClausNet: What is your favorite Christmas song?
St.NickPDX: "The Christmas Song."

ClausNet: What was the last book that you read?
St.NickPDX: "The River Why."

ClausNet: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
St.NickPDX: "Actor."

ClausNet: What profession would you not like to attempt?
St.NickPDX: "Accountant."

ClausNet: What were some of your favorite toys as a child?
St.NickPDX: "I loved Lincoln Logs! I loved to build forts with them for my little green army men."

ClausNet: What is your most memorable experience of Santa while growing up?
St.NickPDX: "I don't really have a single one. Seeing Santa was an event we looked forward to for weeks. Growing up, I lived in rural West Virginia. Every year we would drive as a family into the city of Charleston to go to Sears and see Santa. My brother and I sat in the car and looked at the Sears Christmas Catalog during the drive and listened to Carols. It was always magical to see Santa and tell him what we wanted."

ClausNet: What is the hardest question you have gotten as Santa Claus and what was your response?
St.NickPDX: "A child of one of the families we helped was sleeping every night on a living room floor covered in dog poop. She asked why she didn't have a clean bedroom like her friends at school. I told her that her parents working hard to try and make things better for her and that I knew they loved her. I then told her that no matter how hard things seemed to remember that her family and not things were what was important and that by having hard times, she would be stronger and appreciate the easier times ahead even more."

ClausNet: How did you find ClausNet?
St.NickPDX: "I discovered it while doing research on being Santa while setting up the charity."

ClausNet: And what do you like most about ClausNet?
St.NickPDX: "I love the support I've gotten from members like Marty, Jonathon, Felix, and others."

ClausNet: Is there a Santa or Mrs. Claus over the years that you admire or has inspired you? Can you tell us a little bit about him/her?
St.NickPDX: "I'm a big fan of Marty. There is little I can add that others haven't already said."

ClausNet: What advice can you give to a first time Santa or Mrs. Claus?
St.NickPDX: "Have fun! Remember it is about others and helping make the world a little better than you found it."

ClausNet: Anything else you would like to add?
St.NickPDX: "I just hope that everyone finds joy in being a part of this amazing community and passes it on as often as they can."

Thank you Mark! Everyone, please join me in congratulating St.NickPDX, our ClausNet Featured Member of the Month for November 2018!

    • Coping With Depression Before and After The Christmas Season
With all of the joy, love, wonder, and excitement that Christmas brings the "professional" Santa; it can, for some, bring a bit of sadness, anxiety, and overall depression too. Now, many might think, "What!? How can Santa be depressed...it's Christmas!" but it truly can happen and it's good to inventory those feelings and problem solve what an appropriate solution might be.

    • Auld Lang Syne
Every New Year’s Eve at the stroke of midnight, millions around the world traditionally gather together to sing the same song, “Auld Lang Syne”. As revilers mumble though the song’s versus, it often brings many of them to tears – regardless of the fact that most don’t know or even understand the lyrics. Confusion over the song’s lyrics is almost as much of a tradition as the song itself. Of course that rarely stops anyone from joining in.

    • Merry Christmas, My Friend
Every year around this time, some variation of this poem is circulated online. The poem is generally credited to “a soldier stationed in Okinawa” or more recently since September 11, 2001, “a Marine stationed in Afghanistan”.

However, the poem’s true author is Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt.

Originally entitled, “Merry Christmas, My Friend”, Corporal Schmidt wrote the poem in 1986 while serving as Battalion Counter Sniper at the Marine Barracks 8th & I, in Washington, D.C.

That day the poem was placed in the Marine Corps Gazette and distributed worldwide. Schmidt’s poem was later published in Leatherneck (Magazine of the Marines) in December 1991.

    • George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation
On October 3, 1789, President George Washington issued a proclamation naming Thursday, November 26, 1789, a national day of Thanksgiving.

In it, Washington called upon all Americans to express their gratitude for a happy conclusion to the nation's war of independence and the successful ratification of the United States Constitution. Especially this year, as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, we should reflect on the full meaning of the day. Let’s strive to be truly thankful in our hearts this Thanksgiving.

What better way to enter the holiday season?

Do you think we should start calling out those in our community whose actions or behavior is unbecoming of Santa Claus or Mrs. Claus?

    • Backlash Building Against The Man Who Invented Christmas
Backlash Building Against The Man Who Invented Christmas

      ChristmasWeekly.com
      September 7, 2017

      EXCERPT:

There is a new Christmas movie headed to theaters this Christmas about Charles Dickens about his creation of A Christmas Carol and Christmas purists hate it. Already.

The film has a stellar cast that features the dreamy-eyed Dan Stevens as Dickens and the legendary Christopher Plummer as Scrooge. Here is the trailer:

“This is a very presumptuous film,” said Christmas fan and would-be film critic, Arnold Yates, via MSN. “Charles Dickens was great but he certainly didn’t invent Christmas. Bah Humbug!”

That sentiment is growing online as the preview makes the rounds.

    • Seeking recognition
Seeking recognition is a downward path for a legend who performs his tasks in the veil of night.

Recently, a fellow portrayer of Santa posted an image on Facebook that they constructed to look like a magazine cover with him on it and several story snips like many publications have on their covers.  You may have seen it if they are your friend on Facebook.  It looks okay.  The composition is good, but the rendering when uploading it to Facebook became distorted it and it is quite pixelated when you look at it from a development standpoint.

Yes, I said it and it is not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. I do view many Facebook sites along with websites and posted photos. Frankly, many of these postings should have never been put on public display.

    • Infringement? Make up your own mind.
In the last couple of days, on several different social media and bidding sites, an item has been offered for sale that in my opinion is cause for suspicion.  I would like to bring that product to your attention.

There is some disagreement over whether or not it is an infringement or not.  I believe it is close enough to be considered as an infringement, but that is not the only the reason behind my post.
