This month's Featured Member is from Lebanon Pennsylvania. Santa John Gable joined the ClausNet family over 10 years ago and has been a key contributor to the site ever since. We caught up with Santa John a few days ago, and here is what he had to say...

ClausNet: How long have you been portraying Santa Claus and how did you get started?
Santa John Gable: "In 2005 at the age of 35, I asked my mom if she would make me a suit, with no real idea what I would do or where I would go. I ended up visiting homeless shelters and nursing homes with a hospice group that I volunteered with. Little did I know what lie ahead."

john

ClausNet: What or who are your influences on your portrayal of Santa Claus?
Santa John Gable: "When I first decided I wanted to do this, I googled, and the first (and most impressive) person I came across was Dutch Schrap. He is the person whose portrayal I admired the most, and he was pretty local to me. I contacted him, and he wrote back and was very encouraging and helpful. We have been (mostly online) friends ever since."

ClausNet: What do you enjoy most about being Santa Claus?
Santa John Gable: "I really enjoy using my social status to help do good for others. In years past I have collected gifts and necessities for several local families who were having a bad year. I have collected blankets, clothing, food and toys for a local homeless shelter. Last Christmas I started a music scholarship for the local high school, so that one student who is pursuing music as a career will have an extra $1000 to start them off right. I hope this will be a yearly thing. All of these things were made possible by donations from those who visit with me each year. I am simply the facilitator."

ClausNet: What is your most memorable visit?
Santa John Gable: "It was early in my career when I was still a mall Santa. Two teenage boys approached, and I thought it was going to be trouble. However one of them pulled out a framed photo of their aunt, who had always brought them to visit Santa. Turns out she had passed away from cancer that year, and they wanted a photo of themselves and me, holding her picture. Still makes me tear up to think of it."

ClausNet: Do you have a favorite gig?
Santa John Gable: "I work at a place called Misty Run Tree Farm every year, and they have become like family to me. The same folks come back every year to get a tree, and take a free picture with Santa. It is relaxed, informal, and the place looks like something right out of a Hallmark movie. If they could just do something about the mud."

ClausNet: What is your dream gig?
Santa John Gable: "I guess I dream small, because the local hometown holiday parade is it. I got to do it one year when the parade got rained out and their Santa couldn't make the rain date. I am told I am next in line if the current Santa ever cannot fulfill his duties."

john

ClausNet: What keeps you busy when you are not being Santa?
Santa John Gable: "I am a married father of three kids, ages 15, 19, and 21. I work a full time job at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center."

ClausNet: What are your hobbies / interests?
Santa John Gable: "I have been volunteering with the local high school music department for 9 years, ever since my oldest was in 8th grade. I have 2 years left, and I love helping them with marching band, concerts, spring musicals, and whatever else they need. It keeps me pretty busy before and after the holiday season."

ClausNet: What is your favorite color?
Santa John Gable: "Purple."

john

ClausNet: What is your favorite food?
Santa John Gable: "I love pizza, mashed potatoes, a good turkey dinner with all the sides. All things I am trying not to eat right now, as I am down almost 40 pounds since February. Santa still has to be healthy. That's what they make padding for, right?"

ClausNet: Coke or Pepsi?
Santa John Gable: "Coke, if I am drinking soda."

ClausNet: What is your favorite cookie?
Santa John Gable: "It's a toss up between chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin."

ClausNet: What is your favorite movie?
Santa John Gable: "This is a tough one. I own hundreds. I like movies based in the past, like Memphis Belle or The Majestic."

ClausNet: Do you have a favorite Christmas movie?
Santa John Gable: "Another tough one, but I would have to say Miracle on 34th Street, both the 1947 version and the 1994 version."

ClausNet: What is your favorite Christmas song?
Santa John Gable: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Judy Garland."

ClausNet: What was the last book that you read?
Santa John Gable: "I don't read many books I'm ashamed to say. I think the last was actually A Christmas Carol by Dickens."

ClausNet: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Santa John Gable: "I still don't know what I would like to be when I grow up, and I am almost 50. I love doing anything that involves helping others. Unfortunately most of these jobs are volunteer or very low paying."

ClausNet: What profession would you not like to attempt?
Santa John Gable: "Too many to list. I definitely couldn't handle being a surgeon, blood and guts don't sit well with me."

ClausNet: What were some of your favorite toys as a child?
Santa John Gable: "Legos, Tonka trucks, Big Wheels, and when I got a little older, this electric (battery) experiment kit that came with lights and wires that you could connect to do all sorts of things."

ClausNet: What is your most memorable experience of Santa while growing up?
Santa John Gable: "Oddly enough, I have no recollection of visiting Santa as a child. No pictures either. Strange then that I got into it as an adult"

ClausNet: What is the hardest question you have gotten as Santa Claus and what was your response?
Santa John Gable: "I've been asked if I could cure a young girl's mom of a disease, cancer I think. I told her that Santa can't grant those kinds of wishes, but that I would be sure to say a prayer for her mom. That seemed to make her feel better and she went on with her visit. I'll never know what happened to her mom after that night."

ClausNet: What is the strangest request you have gotten as Santa Claus?
Santa John Gable: "Single ladies, young and old, seem to think it's funny to ask for a man. I always laugh and tell them ‘I will do my best!’"

ClausNet: How did you find ClausNet?
Santa John Gable: "It was recommended to me by a fellow Santa!"

ClausNet: And what do you like most about ClausNet?
Santa John Gable: "It is a wealth of knowledge, and most are willing to share what they have learned with new Santas."

ClausNet: Is there a Santa or Mrs. Claus over the years that you admire or has inspired you? Can you tell us a little bit about him/her?
Santa John Gable: "See question number two."

ClausNet: What advice can you give to a first time Santa or Mrs. Claus?
Santa John Gable: "While it is important that your suit fits kind of well, and your beard is neat (no matter real or designer), what matters most is your heart. Care for the kids (and adults) and that's half the battle."

ClausNet: Anything else you would like to add?
Santa John Gable: " No one Santa's portrayal is the ‘right’ one. Support each other, help each other, and care for those who support you. THAT makes a good Santa."

Thank you John! Everyone, please join me in congratulating Santa John Gable, our ClausNet Featured Member of the Month for July 2019!

    • If You Have the Post Christmas Blues You’re Doing Christmas Wrong
The post-Christmas blues are a very real thing. Once the date of December 25th has passed the specter of December 26th is an ominous marker to many. It sits there on the calendar like the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come. Silent and foreboding, the very image of the hooded Angel of Death it seems to be. And why not?

Just about anywhere you look Americans are tossing trees to the curb, ripping down lights from rooftops and radio stations are flipping back to everyday music. What took months to build gets deconstructed in a matter of a couple of days.

    • Auld Lang Syne
Every New Year’s Eve at the stroke of midnight, millions around the world traditionally gather together to sing the same song, “Auld Lang Syne”. As revilers mumble though the song’s versus, it often brings many of them to tears – regardless of the fact that most don’t know or even understand the lyrics. Confusion over the song’s lyrics is almost as much of a tradition as the song itself. Of course that rarely stops anyone from joining in.

    • Merry Christmas, My Friend
Every year around this time, some variation of this poem is circulated online. The poem is generally credited to “a soldier stationed in Okinawa” or more recently since September 11, 2001, “a Marine stationed in Afghanistan”.

However, the poem’s true author is Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt.

Originally entitled, “Merry Christmas, My Friend”, Corporal Schmidt wrote the poem in 1986 while serving as Battalion Counter Sniper at the Marine Barracks 8th & I, in Washington, D.C.

That day the poem was placed in the Marine Corps Gazette and distributed worldwide. Schmidt’s poem was later published in Leatherneck (Magazine of the Marines) in December 1991.

Do you think we should start calling out those in our community whose actions or behavior is unbecoming of Santa Claus or Mrs. Claus?

Backlash Building Against The Man Who Invented Christmas

      ChristmasWeekly.com
      September 7, 2017

      EXCERPT:

There is a new Christmas movie headed to theaters this Christmas about Charles Dickens about his creation of A Christmas Carol and Christmas purists hate it. Already.

The film has a stellar cast that features the dreamy-eyed Dan Stevens as Dickens and the legendary Christopher Plummer as Scrooge. Here is the trailer:

“This is a very presumptuous film,” said Christmas fan and would-be film critic, Arnold Yates, via MSN. “Charles Dickens was great but he certainly didn’t invent Christmas. Bah Humbug!”

That sentiment is growing online as the preview makes the rounds.

    • Seeking recognition
Seeking recognition is a downward path for a legend who performs his tasks in the veil of night.

Recently, a fellow portrayer of Santa posted an image on Facebook that they constructed to look like a magazine cover with him on it and several story snips like many publications have on their covers.  You may have seen it if they are your friend on Facebook.  It looks okay.  The composition is good, but the rendering when uploading it to Facebook became distorted it and it is quite pixelated when you look at it from a development standpoint.

Yes, I said it and it is not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. I do view many Facebook sites along with websites and posted photos. Frankly, many of these postings should have never been put on public display.

    • Infringement? Make up your own mind.
In the last couple of days, on several different social media and bidding sites, an item has been offered for sale that in my opinion is cause for suspicion.  I would like to bring that product to your attention.

There is some disagreement over whether or not it is an infringement or not.  I believe it is close enough to be considered as an infringement, but that is not the only the reason behind my post.

Why Bass Pro Shops’ longtime Santa won’t be back this Christmas

Christmas is going to be a little different this year for families whose traditions include visiting Santa at Bass Pro Shops. Paul Davis, who spent the last nine years as the Bass Pro Santa in Ashland, will not be there anymore.
