Former North Carolina amusement park Santa Claus impersonator allegedly sexually abused children: report

Bevier Hasbrouck Sleight III is charged with several crimes, including first-degree child abuse and offensive touching

Published September 10, 2024 8:05pm EDT

A North Carolina man who formerly portrayed Santa Claus at a theme park has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing children between March 2023 and March 2024, according to reports.

The Cherokee Indian Police Department said 78-year-old Bevier Hasbrouck Sleight III is facing 13 child abuse charges, including two counts each of aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse, abusive sexual contact, contributing to the delinquency of minors, and first-degree child abuse, as well as three counts of offensive touching.

Police said Sleight was an employee at Santa’s Land Fun Park & Zoo on Wolfetown Road, though the incidents the charges were connected to allegedly occurred at his home, not the park, WLOS, a local ABC TV news station in Asheville, North Carolina, reported.

The station also reported that Sleight’s home is located on Blythe Drive, just behind the park.

Court records allege the incidents happened between March 2023 and March 2024, and involved roughly a dozen children between 5 and 7 years old.

Santa’s Land Fun Park & Zoo could not be reached for comment.

The park’s site highlights the opportunity children are given to meet the legendary Christmas figure.

"Your kids will be excited to visit Santa at his own house in the mountains, where they will receive their own ‘good conduct diploma,’" the site reads.

The park also gives children the opportunity to come face-to-face with wild and exotic animals from around the world and a magic show.

Fox News Digital made several attempts to reach the Cherokee Indian Police Department.

Police told the news station that Sleight is allegedly a customer of 39-year-old Caroline Roland, a local woman who allegedly runs a child trafficking ring.

Roland faces 11 charges, including child abuse, and is behind bars at the Cherokee Detention Center.

The news station reported that the owner of Santa’s Land Fun said Sleight is no longer an employee at the park

Sleight, who is out on bond, is due in tribal court on Wednesday.

I super vigilante when it comes to safeguarding myself and others.

I never have children on my knee, hugs are not real hugs, my hands, as the writer states, are visible at all times, and, Im never alone with children.

Its so so sad that the joy of what we do, can so easily be be darkened by , (need to careful with my words) sexual abusers and predictors.

I worked for ten years as a specialist working with sex offenders and it was very pleasant at all, nothing a human being can do to another will ever shock or surprise me again.

They steal the innocence from children, unforgivable grrrrrrrr

I'm the same, never alone with the children, my hands are highly visible and I never let a child on my knee.

Though I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND why you guys PROTECT YOURSELF, (NEEDS TO BE DONE) it hurts my heart that we MUST KEEP ALL THESE THINGS IN OUR HEAD, while doing what we do! I do VERY LITTLE Santa work with unknown people / families & so I don't worry as much about these things. BUT IT ONLY TAKES ONE TIME OF FORGETTING WHERE ARE MY HAND in this photo? HOW DOES THIS LOOK OR WILL THIS BE OK. Because we typically stay with the same group of people year in and year out, I do allow the children on our laps, both Kathy's & myself. I'm BLESSED that if or when I pick up a child, mom & dad KNOW ME or enough of ME that they too love that photo where Santa is close and giving a true hug. BUT when I am NOT with my people of years from the past, LIKE YOU ALL, THE WALL HAS TO AND WILL STAY UP, UNLESS the child or parents ask for a photo of me hugging or embracing their child. I AM WITH MANY CHILDREN who are on the Autism Spectrum, THESE CHILDREN RARELY EVER THINK ABOUT POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. If they want to give or get a hug IT JUST HAPPENS, & AGAIN, I'm BLESSED to have been thrown into that position and I follow to where I believe I'm allowed. BUT the REAL WORLD HAS HELPED TO WRECK HOW WE CAN BE SANTA W/OUT A, B, or C always being on the table.

While we should all be vigilant in our own practices (not being alone with children, keeping hands visible, etc.), we should all take comfort in knowing that false claims of sexual assault are less common than false claims of robbery.

I don't walk around worried someone is going to falsely accuse me of robbery, so I certainly don't worry about being falsely accused of sexual assault.

That said, I still make sure my hands are visible for photos and the like to make sure I don't accidentally touch someone inappropriately without realizing it.

Hopefully the children and families involved in the above story have the support they need.

Well, I didn't think I'd be reading THIS today (although, thanks for the link, Doug). I feel sick. That disgusting man deserves far more than a prison sentence. I could always have Blitzen tear his "package" clean off. Seriously, what is wrong with people?! And what sort of scumbag uses the good, saintly name of Santa Claus to enact evil, perverse desires on innocent little children?

Like others have said, always make sure your hands are visible. As an added bonus, you might even consider using a noticeable color of gloves (I have various green pairs and they photograph very well).

I wonder if this scumbag ever had a background check before he was hired and if so, what were the results?

We get enough scrutiny already without the posted faces of bearded criminals like this.

Most sexual predators and wife beaters sadly have a clean criminal background check.

it is so hard to have a reasonable opinion on anything in the news today - as a first responder I have seen too many times when the actions of my colleagues were entirely correct, and then horribly mis-represented by the news media . . . .

that said - this article is pretty shy on details - they don't tell you much of anything about this guy - except that he (at some time) worked as a Santa - and what he did was not even related to his Santa activities - BUT that is what they chose to use to identify him - if he really did what they say he did that is pretty horrible, but the point of sharing is that even though it was not actively being Santa that is what they painted him as - and that reflects on the whole Santa community - I like @Santa Craig Maxwell's comment of "collective ambassadorship" - we are all always on deck when it comes to the image and spirit of Santa. . . .

The media identify him to maximize the impact for there circulation.

A few years ago, someone over here waa imprisoned for sexual offenses which were perpetrated over 25 yrs ago, he had latterly worked as a Santa, as such the headline was Santa Sex Offender :(

I am not by any stretch of the imagination minimalizing what these idiots did with my next statement. It is next to impossible to listen to or read a news report these days without getting some reporters spin on an event. Very sad!

No need to apologize. I took me way to long to type that post because the words I would use to describe them in my normal vocabulary are not fit for this forum nor are they Santa like.

This is so sad. I have been away on vacation and come back to someone who has defiled the face of a loved figure like Santa.

I read over more of this and some of the replies. I too make sure my hands are visible at all times, I even ask photographers to help ensure my hands are both visible. I ask if kids want to sit on my knee or stand, I always give them the option to do what is comfortable for them. I do hug kids and I always am sure that both hands are high on their backs and visible at all times. If I have to help lift a child, I clearly show my hands and where they are as I grab the arms and never around the torso. I generally go with what the child and the parent/adult are comfortable with and never force anything. I also do not allow parents to force their kids to do something they do not want to do. Although we do get some of the crying pictures.

This is horrifying. I try to keep Santa in my heart all year long, but this makes me want to do terrible things to that man involving a stout chair, a lot of duct tape and some tools from my workshop.

Last year I heard about a Santa who had been at the mall where I ended up doing the last two days of their season. I had heard that he was insisting that children sit on his lap/knee, even if they were uncomfortable or of an age where it just didn't seem necessary.

I wonder if that had anything to do with his not finishing the season?

Sadly, these sorts of people will always be around, and often by the time they are discovered the damage has already been done.

    • Published by William B. Gilley in 1821, “The Children’s Friend. Number III. A New-Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve”, is believed to be the first book published in America to include lithographic illustrations. This book includes a poem about “Santeclaus” along with eight colored illustrations.

However, what makes this book significant is the poem and illustrations are thought to be the earliest known visual representation of Santa Claus in a sleigh pulled by reindeer. The poem also marks Santa’s first appearance on Christmas Day rather than December 6, the feast day of St. Nicholas.

      The Children’s Friend. Number III.
A New-Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve
      by William B. Gilley, 1821

      Old Santeclaus with much delight
His reindeer drives this frosty night.
O’er chimney tops, and tracks of snow,
To bring his yearly gifts to you.

The steady friend of virtuous youth,
The friend of duty, and of truth,
Each Christmas eve he joys to come
Where love and peace have made their home”

Through many houses he has been,
And various beds and stockings seen,
Some, white as snow, and neatly mended,
Others, that seem’d for pigs intended.

Where e’er I found good girls or boys,
That hated quarrels, strife and noise,
Left an apple, or a tart,
       Or wooden gun, or painted cart;

To some I gave a pretty doll,
       To some a peg-top, or a ball;
No crackers, cannons, squibs, or rockets,
To blow their eyes up, or their pockets.

No drums to stun their Mother’s ear,
      Nor swords to make their sisters fear;
But pretty books to store their mind
With knowledge of each various kind.

But where I found the children naughty,
In manners rude, in temper haughty,
       Thankless to parents, liars, swearers,
Boxers, or cheats, or base tale-bearers,

I left a long, black, birchen rod,
Such as the dread command of God
Directs a Parent’s hand to use
When virtue’s path his sons refuse

    • 10 Essentials to Being a Better Santa
Here are some DOs and DON'Ts on being Santa

      Treat every child with respect.

Never make fun of a child.

Look into the child’s eyes when you speak to them.

Speak softly. Children are sharing confidences with you.

Acknowledge a child’s requests even if you don’t understand them.

Never promise a toy request to avoid a child’s disappointment.

Never promise a pet. Santas a toymaker and only animals produce pets.

If the child can’t remember their wish list, assure them you know what they want.

Never leave a child wondering if Santa heard their Christmas wishes.

Every child worries about being on Santas “Naughty or Nice List”. Tell each child “You’re on the “Nice List.” It will bring happiness to everyone!

    • How do You Portray Santa?
Portraying Santa is acting; it is a characterization of a mythical character.

Most of us never think of ourselves as actors, but we are. Certain characteristics of Santa Claus have been handed down from one generation to another. The way we dress and conduct ourselves all follow an established pattern.

Santa Claus is one of the most recognizable characters throughout the world. This came about from the advertising campaign of the Coke Cola Company and the creative painting genius, of Haddon Sundblom. Coke Cola was looking to increase winter sales of its soft drink and hired Sundblom to produce illustrations for prominent magazines. These illustrations appeared during the holiday season from the late 1930s into the early 1970s and set the standard for how Santa should look.

This characterization of Santa with rosy cheeks, a white beard, handlebar mustache plus a red costume trimmed in white fur is the image most everyone has in their minds. Unconsciously people are going to judge you against that image. If your beard isn’t white or you have a soiled suit it will register with the onlooker.

By the way, the majority of Sundblom's paintings depict Santa with a Brown Belt and Brown Boots. Not until his later illustrations did he change the color to Black for these items. Within the past few years many costume companies have offered the Coke Cola Suit and it has become very popular. You can tell it by the large buttons and absence of fur down the front of the jacket.

No matter how you portray Santa, be it home visits, schools, churches, parades, corporate events, malls, hospitals we all make an entrance and an impression! The initial impression we make determines if our client will ask us to return.

      The 5 Second Rule

I have a theory: When you enter the presence of your audience you have about 5 seconds to make people believe you are the real Santa.

    • Auld Lang Syne
Every New Year’s Eve at the stroke of midnight, millions around the world traditionally gather together to sing the same song, “Auld Lang Syne”. As revilers mumble though the song’s versus, it often brings many of them to tears – regardless of the fact that most don’t know or even understand the lyrics. Confusion over the song’s lyrics is almost as much of a tradition as the song itself. Of course that rarely stops anyone from joining in.
