Handel wanted the music of the gospel to be for the people

interesting to note that in his day - the church disapproved of what they thought was a vulgar debasement of the gospel - putting it into music for the common man....

and the theater crowd didn't like that folks went to church to hear the Messiah instead of going to their shows.....

but the gospel was to be taken out into the streets and the marketplace - I think they nailed it !!!
